Team India captain made it look easy as he got going yet again at Mohali this time. His unbeaten 72 off 52 balls helped India surge ahead of South Africa comfortably with an over and seven wickets to spare. India was pursuing a not-so-easy to chase the target of 150 in the second T20. The first one was washed out.

Virat Kohli never looked in any kind of trouble at any point in the inning as he sweet timed the ball repeatedly to assert his tremendous form. His stroke play was near perfect as he dominated the SA bowling right from the beginning. His 72 runs had four hits to the fence while three sailed over the ropes.

Kohli’s batting has followed this pattern for a good part of his career. He loves to chase stiff targets and ends up making it easy for the team. Today’s innings was a classy display of authority and confidence as his shot selection was spot on and the execution absolutely flawless as always. He never once lost control of the game. The 61-run partnership with the dependable Dhawan put the South African attack on the defensive.

India’s chase was planned, measured and systematic. The hitting was clean and the strike rotation smartly managed. Dhawan was also going great guns until that inspired David Miller moment. Dhawan made a confident 40 facing 31 balls.

Shreyas Iyer kept the momentum going with 14-ball 16. Rishabh Pant disappointed yet again, succumbing to left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin’s long hop. For South Africa, Temba Bavuma scored a smart 43-ball 49 to create the right conditions for the team’s specialist power-hitters. The stage was being set for a big score but India’s new crop of white-ball specialists stalled a possible offensive. SA was smartly restricted to 149/5 after winning the toss.

The Indian attack was led by Deepak Chahar and they did a great job by figuring out early how to restrict the batsmen from exploiting the short boundaries. A brilliant mix of hard length and slower balls had the South African in trouble as they failed to go for the big ones. Chahar was particularly impressive as he bowled an intelligent spell to finish with 2/22 from his quota of overs.

India now has a 1-0 lead with one game to go on Sunday.
